The Electric Lady Big Band is a remarkable musical ensemble rooted in the legacy of the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Its inception traces back to 2018, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hendrix’s iconic album, "Electric Ladyland." The idea was sparked by Hendrix's own musings during one of his final interviews in 1970, where he expressed a desire for a big band to write and conduct for. Although his vision was never realized due to his untimely passing, the spirit of that ambition was revived decades later.
Commissioned by the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival, guitarist, vocalist, and Hendrix enthusiast Denny Ilett spearheaded the formation of the 16-piece orchestra, comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in the UK. The Electric Lady Big Band set out to reimagine "Electric Ladyland," creating fresh arrangements that paid homage to Hendrix's innovative blend of rock, blues, jazz, funk, soul, and psychedelia. Their dedication culminated in a celebrated recording of the album released in 2018.
The band quickly gained recognition, performing to sold-out crowds at esteemed venues and festivals, including the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival, Ronnie Scott’s, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Leeds Jazz Festival, and Swansea Jazz Festival. Their second release, "Up From The Skies," launched in 2022, further solidified their place in the contemporary music landscape.
With a mission to expand the psychedelic soundscape for large ensembles, the Electric Lady Big Band honors Jimi Hendrix's genius while infusing their performances with genuine love and respect for his artistry. Their work continues to resonate, bridging the gap between past and present, and ensuring that Hendrix's revolutionary sound remains vibrant for new generations.
